Spanish Cultural Immersion*

History comes to life in this incredible class; the city itself becomes your primary text! In short lectures held twice each week, you learn about aspects of Seville’s culture, history, art, society and religious influence. Then, three days a week, you experience the exciting locations just discussed in class days before! This is interactive learning at its best. You get an appreciation and understanding of Seville you couldn’t get from any book, visiting amazing places, including:

Itálica– An ancient Roman city founded in 206 B.C., it features a fully excavated amphitheater
and the ruins of several villas with fragments of their mosaic floors still intact.
Barrio de Santa Cruz– The city’s ancient Jewish section, with winding streets, unexpected plazas and hidden patios. It evokes Moorish times when Seville was a center of Jewish learning and culture.
Parque de María Luisa– A gorgeous, sunny park that hosted the 1921 Hispano-American exhibition. The nearby Archeological Museum is full of Phonecian, Greek, Roman and medieval
artifacts.
Cathedral– The tomb of Christopher Columbus is the highlight of this 15th century Gothic
cathedral – one of the world’s largest! Climb the stairs to the top of the Giralda, a once-Moorish minaret transformed into a bell tower by conquering Christians.
Alcázar– The official residence of the current king and queen of Spain, and home to Seville’s rulers since Roman times, this stunning Moorish complex is an incredible collection of lavish
gardens and ornate halls.
Plaza del Toros– Cheer on Seville’s famously graceful matadors – or the bulls, if your sympathies lie elsewhere – at La Maestranza, one of the most famous and prestigious bullrings in the world.
Museo de Bellas Artes– This amazing baroque building hosts the works of Spanish masters, such as El Greco, Zurbaran and Murillo.
Hospital de la Caridad– A breathtaking Baroque hospital built three centuries ago by a Spanish
nobleman who spent his entire fortune on its construction. Today it is a home for the ill and elderly, and has several paintings by Murillo and Valdes Leal on display.
Plaza de España– The perfect setting for a Sunday afternoon outing, its quaint moats and regal
balconies offer a stunning view.
Iglesia del Salvador– This 17th-century church is built on the foundations of an ancient mosque located right in the center of Seville. The Baroque sculptures, paintings and altar pieces are unforgettable.
San Luis Church– Crowned by beautiful octagonal-shaped glazed-tile domes, this Baroque church is now an art museum located in the Macarena district.
Museo Arqueológico– This archeological museum shows off a small collection of pre-Roman and
Roman artifacts excavated in the surrounding provinces.
Popular Arts Museum– Housed in the Pabellón Mudéjar on the Plaza de América in the María Luisa Park.

Digital Photography*

Improve your picture-taking ability in a city that demands to be photographed. The city of Seville provides you with centuries of artistic and architectural beauty – remarkable subject matter that will give you plenty of inspiration! This course will help you develop an understanding of how to create unforgettable photos using proper lighting and composition.
Please note: A darkroom is not featured in this course, and students must supply their own camera.

The Art of Andalusian Dance*

These passionate people have taken swirling, dramatic dance movements and matched them to pulsating guitar and powerful percussion. Will you be able to keep up? Find out if you have the footwork and the fire to dance Flamenco or Sevillana, and understand a bit more about the energy and intrigue that define Spain itself. You’ll study the steps and get a chance to check out lavish gowns and colorful costumes as vibrant as Spain itself.
