The French Riviera is more than the world’s playground; it’s also home to legendary art, acclaimed cuisine, and breathtaking views. You’ll marvel at the old-world charm of Vieux Nice and admire the runway-ready sense of personal style that comes naturally to the natives. You’ll find your taste buds tempted by cuisine from across the Mediterranean and around the world. Nice is also a perfect jumping-off point for exploring the rest of the Côte d’Azur, from glamorous Cannes to regal Monaco to artistic St-Paul-de-Vence. You’ll discover that life in Nice truly goes way beyond nice!
Dining the French Way
The French are renowned for their cuisine and their approach to fine dining. Here in Nice, you’ll find lively street markets over-flowing with fresh fruits and vegetables, family-run bistros and bustling pizzerias. Abundant eateries offer a range of cuisines, from Niçoise to Middle Eastern to Italian. Whether you feel like sampling the city’s trademark socca at a street stall, savoring the poisson du jour at a landmark bistro like Au Petit Gari, or want to share slices of pizza at an Old Town favorite like Bar Du Coin, Nice satisfies your appetite, big-time.
Paint the Town Rouge
Art lovers, rejoice! World-class museums and galleries make their home in Nice. From the modern Musée d’Art Modern et d’Art Contemporain to the Asian Musée des Arts Asiatiques, from the timeless splendor of Matisse to the inspiration of long-time Riviera resident Chagall, you’ll be at one of Europe’s cultural epicenters. Pay attention while you stroll the streets; Nice’s stunning architecture features Belle Époque gems from the 19th century, as well as modern and minimalist structures that simply amaze.
Shop ‘Til You Drop
Looking fabulous is a way of life in France. The elegant Galeries Lafayette department store and plenty of designer boutiques on Rue Paradis and Avenue de Suède line the streets, making it easy to keep up with the latest looks. Be sure to snap up soaps crafted from the local lavender or pick up traditional terra cotta Provençal pottery. If you’d rather shop for edible treasures than wearable ones, don’t miss Oliviera in Vieux Nice, a cozy restaurant lined with vats of locally produced olive oils you can have bottled and take home as delicious gifts.
Nice is TWICE as Nice at Night!
Ooh la la! Nighttime in Nice is vibrant, colorful – and unforgettable! Take in the live show at Théâtre National de Nice, check out a nocturnal concert at Palais Nikaïa, or simply stroll along the Promenade des Anglais. Café terraces on Cours Saleya are great for sipping beverages and indulging in a favorite French sport – people-watching! Stop in one of the city’s ice cream parlors for a scoop, then amble through the beautifully lit streets of Vieux Nice. This spectacular city is a pedestrian’s paradise. Put on your most stylish walking shoes and take it all in!
Catch a Flick
It only makes sense that a city so close to Cannes – home to the world’s best-known film festival – has several cinemas available to those wanting to catch a flick. From Le Mercury on the Place Garibaldi, which shows less mainstream films, to the large and modern Pathé Masséna and Pathé Paris on the bustling Avenue Jean Médecin, Nice delivers a supreme silver screen experience. Don’t miss the open-air Cinema d'Été in Monaco – Europe’s largest – which shows great movies along with breathtaking Mediterranean views.
It’s Au Naturel in Nice
Nice is famous for its dazzling summer sunshine, gorgeous seafront and pristine Mediterranean waters. Stretch out on the pebbled beach lining the Promenade des Anglais, strap on some rollerblades or take a jog. However you get around, the Promenade’s the place to be from dawn until dusk. If you love green spaces, check out Le Parc Phoenix. With 17 acres at the Promenade’s western edge, it houses thousands of native plants and exotic birds. Hike up to Nice’s northern quarter for Le Parc des Arènes de Cimiez, site of Roman ruins and a preserved amphitheater that hosted the Nice Jazz Festival each July for over 30 years. Peaceful olive groves lend a lovely Provençal touch to the surroundings.
Sizzling Summer Celebrations
July’s annual Nice Jazz Festival is one of Europe’s largest at 75 days long, and it brings in top performers. Macy Gray, Seal and Winton Marsalis & the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra are on deck for 2012! There’s the Fête du Château, a lively two-night modern music fest featuring sounds from funk to Latin to rock. Local celebrations like Fête de la Mer include a fishermen procession to the beach. And if you’re missing your annual dose of Fourth of July fireworks, you’ll love Bastille Day, the July 14 national holiday honoring the French Revolution. The Promenade des Anglais is the place to be, with a daylong celebration, military parade, several stages of live music, and huge fireworks on the beach!
